Recommendations for Accommodations in San Diego

For those of you who will need accommodations the night of Thursday May 18th, we have a room block being held at the reduced rate of $139.99/room at the Del Mar Inn (website here). This hotel provides complimentary parking and a complimentary shuttle to UCSD campus, and is 2 blocks from the beach. In order to take advantage of this rate, call the hotel directly to book your room by Friday April 28 at 5pm. The room block is under UCSD SoCal Strings .

When you call, you may request 1 bed or 2 beds (for those who will share with a roommate). After you have booked, we will set up a shuttle service to take those of you who are staying at the hotel to campus, which will be an easier way to get to campus than driving and parking.

After April 28, you may still call the hotel to try to book a room, but your request will be subject to the hotel’s availability.

If you would prefer different accommodations, feel free to browse hotels in the area that are in your price range. Hotels in the immediate vicinity of UCSD are pricier than the rate you will get at the Del Mar Inn, so you may wish to stay in another neighborhood of San Diego and either drive, use rideshare services, or use public transit to reach campus. If you would like recommendations on the best way to reach campus from your hotel of choice, contact the organizer here.

Parking Instructions

A map of parking locations on campus can be found here. Parking is by meter or by permit. If you will need a parking permit for May 18 and/or May 19, please send an email here by May 15 (we can buy one at a discounted rate). Your permit will be available for pickup in Mayer Hall when you arrive; just pull up to the front of the building and stop in to pick up your permit. Otherwise, you can buy a V permit at the nearest pay station for $2/hour or $20/day. They are valid in the V, S, and most of the B zones—see here for more details.

Anyone who has a permit from another UC campus can use their permit to park here, but will need to stop by the parking office to receive the reciprocal permit for UCSD. Note that off-campus parking that is walking distance from Mayer Hall is not reliably available.

Driving and Public Transit Directions to UCSD

For those who are driving from the north, trust Google maps’ traffic updates to tell you which exit to take off the 5 freeway.

For those who are taking the train, there are three possible station stops within 10 miles of UCSD. If you are arriving at Solana Beach Transit Center (about 10 miles north of the campus), take the 101 bus southbound for 24 stops ($1.75 to use, must have exact change). Get off at the Gilman Drive and Eucalyptus Grove Lane bus stop, which is a 2 minute walk from Mayer Hall. If you are arriving at Sorrento Valley Coaster Station (3 miles northeast of the campus), there is no straightforward public transit to campus, and so we recommend calling a rideshare service or taxi. A third option is to arrive at Old Town Transit Center (10 miles south of the campus), from which you can take the 150 bus northbound ($2.50 to use, must have exact change) to the Gilman Drive and Eucalyptus Grove Lane stop, which is again a 2 minute walk from Mayer Hall.
